What inspired you to begin competing in Figure?
My goal was to be in the best shape of my life by the time I was 30 years old. I have always enjoyed being a gym rat since the age of 14 and always wanted to have ripped arms, defined hamstrings, and tights buns! But I just kept my body in a fairly fit condition. I never knew how to achieve those results nor wanted to have a trainer. I thought I knew what to do and looked okay. THEN I met Jenny Lewis. She was preparing for a national competition and looked absolutely amazing! We were out to eat and I was chomping down a burger and fries and she was eating a chicken salad. I really admired her discipline to acheive those ripped arms, defined hamstrings, and tight buns!! And it wasn’t just the chicken salad:). I had heard about the PR Team but she was the one that inspired me to join. I joined the PR Team with Jenny and Carla as my PR coaches and 3 1/2 months later I took first place in my first two competitions with one overall win! I turned 30 one month later! I now continue to pursue my desire to accept the mental and physical challenges as I continue my desire to be a figure competitor. Thanks Jenny:)!
Figure career highlights:
Competing in the Arnold Amateur Figure in Columbus, Ohio in February, 2008. We got to compete on the same stage as the IFBB Pros! Of course not at the same time!! ;)… as rookie that was really cool!
What motivates you to prepare for a Figure competition:
Realizing that 10-12 weeks goes by really fast when you have a specific goal in mind! I feel my abs every morning upon waking to feel and check if they’re coming in as I am leaning out… still waiting for that six pack though!!
Biggest pet peeve in the gym:
Gym rats that don’t re-rack their weights… especially if they have five 45 pound weights on each side of the weight machine. If I were a billionare I would hire a weight boy! Ha ha ha.
What is the most challenging aspect of your pre-contest prep?
EVERYTHING! Withdrawls from cereal, baked Doritos, onion rings, and the week before not being able to drink a diet coke — ugh!
Favorite cardio workout:
Is there such a thing? Okay probably the step mill. I don’t have to move very fast to get a great workout! The worst: sprints. I failed track.
Favorite body part to train:
Back and arms.
Something people may not know about you:
I have the most adorable 9 year old little brother named Grant! He is so precious! He battled Leukemia at a young age and is now a happy healthy little dude! Along with my beautiful mother and handsome dad, they live in southern California. With my family out in southern California I currently reside in Parker, CO. I am happily married to Willie B. who is the wild morning show DJ on 106.7-KBPI! Together we have no kids but 4 dogs, three goats, and a fish! Oh… one day I will be driving my big block engine down the race track! Willie is currently restoring a sweet 1972 Road Runner for me and will be putting a big block engine in it… hmmmhmmm watch out boys! MOPAR BETTY here!!! :)
Your favorite beauty tip:
Put toothpaste on your zits!! Mascara and lip gloss can add simple beauty to a woman’s face!
Training advice for others:
It’s not about winning… it’s about you and your message and the process of getting there.
Favorite pre-contest diet meal:
Blackened Salmon, asparagus with spray butter, and sweet potato with cinnamon and spray butter. (The no-fat/no calorie spray butter of course!) and PR pancakes drowned in sugar-free syrup.
Favorite free meal:
Swiss and mushroom bison burger with onion rings from Ted’s Montana Grill — yummie!
Which supplements do you use?
Beta-alanine, creatine, essential amino-acids, CLA, multi-vitamin, glutamine, and Thermo-Lean (sometimes).
Your favorite post-contest celebration meal:
Pepperoni Pizza and a large diet coke… the diet coke doesn’t make me feel so guilty… ha ha ha.
What is the most rewarding aspect of competing?
Achieving your goal and reflecting on your journey. If you truly enjoyed the journey and inspired others along the way than the journey was worth taking! And of course watching your physique improve over time!
Describe your wildest Fitness Fantasy:
Beating Iris Kyle in an arm wrestling match! ha ha ha:).
Who are your favorite Fitness and Figure competitors/athletes?
Jenny Lynn, Elaine Goodlad, and Kristal Richardson.
What are your upcoming health/fitness/competition goals?
My health goals — STAY HEALTHY and injury free. My competition goals are to eventually become an IFBB Figure PRO. Honestly though, I’m not in a hurry. I enjoy learning about the sport, being involved in such a positive hobby, meeting other competitors, and just being fortunate and blessed to be able to have the physical ability to put my body through what it takes to become the best figure competitor that I can be! I would also like to train novice figure competitors and get my CSCS certification.
Upcoming competition schedule:
Jr. Nationals in June; USA Figure Championships in July; Team Universe Figure Championships in September and/or Nationals in November… Wow that’s a lot! |
